This June and July, 24 Minnesota voters, selected at random, will examine what should be done to help election recounts accomplish the difficult goals of accuracy, transparency, timeliness and cost-effectiveness. This Citizens Jury on Election Recounts is supported by Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and Rep. Laura Brod, lead Republican on the Minnesota House Tax Committee. The Jefferson Center has been running Citizens Juries since 1974 in order to give a cross-section of the public an opportunity to learn more about an important public policy issue in a fair and non-biased hearing and then report their findings and recommendations to the public and elected officials. This Citizens Jury is an opportunity for a microcosm of Minnesota’s voters to examine and evaluate the recent recount in Minnesota, along with other recounts, and report on their findings. Not only will the Citizens Jury’s views be made available to the general public, but the final meeting of the project is scheduled so that the Citizens Jury will be able to report its findings to a national meeting of Secretaries of State held in Minnesota in mid-July. This Citizens Jury will meet on three separate 3–day weekends: June 5–7, June 26–28 and July 16–18.
